Pure Tone Audiometry involves presenting sounds of different frequencies and intensities to the patient through Headphones ( to check the air conduction) and through a Bone vibrator ( to check the bone conduction ) with the help of an Audiometer. The patient responds to sound by raising his hand or pressing the response button if and when he / she hears the sound. The standard procedure is used to measure the smallest sound the patient can hear at different frequencies. Consequently a graph is then plotted. Depending on the results the hearing is categorized as normal or decreased – MILD / MODERATE / etc. Depending upon the nature of hearing loss , it may be further classified as CONDUCTIVE / SENSOINEURAL / MIXED Depending upon the pattern of hearing loss it may be SLOPING / RISING / FLAT , etc.


Human ear is made up of three parts –the outer ,the middle and the inner ear. This test helps in testing middle Ear’s condition.   A small probe is inserted in the outer ear to get the measurement /graph which gives information about the pressure in the middle ear and also about the mobility of the ear ossicles and the tympanic membrane. We can also test the function of the Eustachian Tube – the tube which connects the ear to the back of the nose and is responsible for aeration of the middle ear.


In simple words sound produced by ears !   Yes … our ears hear sound … but in certain conditions they produce sound.   This principle is used in O.A.E. Testing.   After birth of the child , this test can be conducted before discharge from the hospital. This test does not harm the baby and takes a minute to do.   The test helps in early detection of hearing loss which helps in early and timely intervention which is necessary in congenital hearing loss.   A child can learn to talk only if he/she hears speech ! After a certain age the brain looses the ability to understand heard speech and hence it is very important to treat hearing loss at the earliest.   Nowadays this test is routinely done before discharge from the hospital.


A.B.R. (Auditory Brainstem Response) : It involves the monitoring of the neural response generated by a sound stimulus as it travels through the auditory nerve from the ear to the Brain stem. It is a non invasive investigation. This helps in detecting hearing loss in infants, children and difficult to test population.
